Of the 15 or so Im Kwon-taek films I’ve managed to see so far, Gilsotteum is my favourite. It caught me by surprise at the retrospective last year, and I’ll certainly be trying to get to the screening this coming Thursday:

Gilsotteum (1985)

7pm, 1 August 2013

Director: IM Kwon-Taek
Cast: Kim Ji-mi, Shin Seong-il
Running Time: 101 min
Venue: The Korean Cultural Centre UK, Grand Buildings 1-3 Strand, London WC2N 5BW
RSVP: Booking is required via the relevant page on the KCC website

The Women on Screen season

Dedicated to discovering classic Korean films as a guide to Korean film, this seasonal screening will enable people to more easily access the past and present of Korean society and women through films.

Synopsis

Gilsotteum
In 1983, KBS (Korea’s BBC) launched a campaign to reunite families torn apart in the Korean War three decades earlier. Im integrates footage from the campaign into the story of Hwayeong, who leaves her middle-class life in Busan to search for the son she lost in Gilsotteum during the war. An expert dissection of the social and familial rifts in modern Korea.
